Hi friends, what are the books you have read recently? I am right now reading the book 'Think and grow Rich' by Napolean Hill. Have you read that book? It is wonderfully written. Every page of it is filled with tips about how to lead a perfect life. Money is important but it is not the one and the everything. There is something beyond money and that is 'love'.

"Generosity" and "The Gold Bug Variations," both by Richard Powers. His novels, dating back almost two decades, have won many awards as he tries to bridge the humanities and the sciences, including today's digital explosion, through very human characters who 'come alive' in his writing.

Thanks for the information. I would like to purchase them and read. Do you have a feeling kageyd that reading books will have a kind of soothing effect on the RA pain? Have you come across poeple saying that they normally forget the pain while reading books?

Not really. I've read books all my life, and it's just a habit, not an escape. I love books that make me think, good biographies of interesting people, and books that express an appreciation of beauty of all kinds. RA is RA, and books are books. I am also an avid newspaper reader, and devour at least one major paper every day; and no, I do not find reading online newspapers nearly as valuable, because it is so easy to "miss" things when they are not right in your own two hands. I read for breadth, not just for fine focus.

News papers are the ones that I miss. I somehow have no inclination to read them fully. But I enjoy reading magazines and books. You made a mention of biographies which you prefer to read. I am reminded of the autobiography of Mahatma Gandhi,'My expreiments with truth' It provides a wonderful reading.

I just started a biography of V.S.Naipaul. While a Nobel Prize winner, I understand that he could also be a very difficult person in many ways. He and Paul Theroux had a running verbal battle for years, so I'm anxious to learn more about Naipaul, because Theroux, while problematic himself, wrote fascinating books. As a "traveler" I learned much from Theroux.

I am not a book reader, I think I easily get bored with it. Though right now I feel like the need to start reading book to because some people say that it can also release stress. Can you recommend me a book for starters like me?

Crimson, what kind of book do you think you might like? There are mystery books, romantic/love books, travel books, biographies, histories, collections of short stories..... I suggest you visit your local public library, and explain to one of the older librarians (they have had the most experience with different kinds of books, and are most likely to want to help) that you want to start reading books that you might find relaxing, to get your mind off your illness. I'll bet they - usually but not always "she" - will have some good ideas for you. And that way you can experiment without spending a whole lot on buying books (even paperbacks are not cheap any longer). Let us know what you come up with. Kageyd

I just visited our public library and I'm more of a mystery man, more of a detective story guy, heck I even enjoy watching CSI. So the librarian chose me this book.

The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes
US publication: 1893
Author: Arthur Conan Doyle
Detective:
Genre: Novel

though it is not available in our public library, but fortunately I can borrow my wife's kindle 2 so I can subscribe it to Amazon and I think I'm getting excited about it.

My husband is also a mystery man (even after 47 years he's still a mystery to me!!!). He likes the P D James books, and also John Le Carre, especially Le Carre's books written prior to the 1990's, when he was still focussed on the real cold war. He also likes Elizabeth George's mysteries. He used to read the Sherlock Holmes stories to our son at bedtime, and we think that's one of the things that made our son an avid reader as an adult -- at least we like to think so.

Enjoy!! Kageyd

I am going through Graham and Dodd's security analysis for smart investing in the market. Being associated with stock market in big way, I find it hard to go for any casual readings, nowadays.

I've just finished Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger - not what I expected, but I couldn't put it down. I still don't know why lol.

Crimson did you ever read The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes? It's on my to-read list, did you like it?

For a laugh I'd recomend any of Terry Pratchetts Disc World series
For mystery/adventure any by James Rollins, PJ Tracy, Matthew Riley, Dan Brown or J L Carrell.
For horror James Herbert or Stephen King

I read loads of books, I can generally get through 2-3 a week. I didn't personally think reading helps with stress or pain as I get very uncomfortable holding a book for too long as my arms and hands seem to cease up and start hurting and then I get neck ache and back ache. My husband did buy me a Sony E-reader for Crimbo just gone and that has been a life saver, reading is thoroughly enjoyable now.

The book I have recently just finished is the 1st Harry Potter book, I like the films but im not a crazy fan like the majority of the world seems to be, I read it purely as a favour to my sister who is doing a Uni course and thats a book she has to read and do an essay on, so, I read it for morale support and so I know what it's like if she needs any help. That said it wasn't a bad book and considerably shorter than I thought it would be luckily (I didnt fancy reading a huge book that I didnt particularly want to read). I secretly didnt want to like it but it was readable and if I hit a drought of things to read in the future I may read the next one.

I don't particularly have set authors that I read, I could spend hours looking for books in a bookshop and would buy any that I thought sounded good but a few of my fave authors are listed above for anyone that fancies a change.
