It really makes me worry to think that once in a while there is a jackal in the coat of sheep and playing with patient's life. I severely condemn this kind of act and I think the punishment is not enough.

Doctor to Plead Guilty for Faking Painkiller Studies

Massachusetts anesthesiologist Dr. Scott Reuben, the former chief of acute pain at Baystate Medical Center, has agreed to plead guilty to charges that he faked research on painkillers that was published in several medical journals. The charges allege that Reuben was given money by drug companies to perform research on drugs, and that he made up all or some of the patient data for 21 studies published in anesthesiology journals between 1996 and 2008. Reubens faces up to 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and forfeiture of research-related assets worth at least $50,000.

The sad part is that the many, many hard working, ethical doctors -- and there are lots of them -- have their reputations tarnished by the bad ones. I don't say that for bankers because I don't think there are many of them that are ethical, but I've known so many good doctors it must just make them so angry to hear about the unethical ones. But we all need to know.

I guess the one profession that is almost - almost, but not completely - free of fraud is elementary public school teaching. The people who try their darnedest to do their best by the kids, the teaches who do that very hard work for lousy pay are, in my mind, saints.
