Hi there. This is Cindy. Now 45, I was diagnosed of having rheumatoid arthritis. It's really not that painful so far but it's a lot of discomfort. Anyway, other than taking pain medication, can you please suggest or recommend anything that you know will help me further relieve me from the pain when it attacks? Thanks for your help.

Cindy, I am so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. There are however many things that you can do to improve your quality of life and relieve some of the pain associated with this condition. First of all it is actually very important to get regular (low impact) exercise. You should consult your doctor as to the exercises that would be best for your specific joint problems. I have found that machines such as an elliptical that simulate running only with much less impact can be helpful as well as activities such as yoga.

Also it is important to make sure you are getting enough magnesium. More than half the US population is believed to be magnesium deficient. Magnesium is a mineral that is essential to muscle and joint health as well as 325+ enzyme reactions necessary to normal body functioning. An excellent source of magnesium is epsom salt baths because the magnesium has been shown to absorb through the skin directly into the blood stream. Personally I use pepsom sports because I like the spearmint scent more than the bland store brand. Just put 2 cups of epsom salt in a warm bath and soak for 20-30 minutes. You should be able to notice your muscles and joints are more relaxed and therefore less painful after the first bath and continued use just adds to the relief.

Hopefully those two suggestions will help to immediately reduce some of the pain and discomfort you are experiencing. However, if your condition gets worse you may want to consult with your doctor about Remicade which is an infusion based drug which has been shown to drastically reduce pain and inflammation while improving joint function in patients with moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis.

I wish you all the best!

I find the best defense is to keep stress free and my immune system balanced. If I find myself overly stressed I take echanacea with reiki and astraligus. Don't use it all the time though. Cayenne in food or herbals form, cinnomin and ginger seem to help if I am starting to get sore. I will take that before a pain killer anytime.

I also use Sea Kelp to keep my thyroid from getting to hypo. This year the doctor gave me blood pressure pills, the relief of the excess watergain helped to decrease the discomfort and keep me moving. My RA is much better with the BP pills, it's the beta blocker LoPressor

Sounds gross, but fish oil contain omega 3 that helps reduce inflamation leading to a decrease in symptoms of arthritis. There are side effects though. Fishy taste in the mouth and bad breath. :p

This may be coincidental, but when I was having gall bladder problems, I began drinking dandelion tea with a little dash of honey. Within a week or so, my joint pain was cut in half.

I find a lot of relief with fish oil and it is very beneficial for heart health as well. At one point my doctor had me taking 5 a day for joint pain and inflammation. Just make sure you buy a good brand. I cant think of the name I was taking. It was like Nordic or something from norway. Very very good quality.

You can try fish oil in the form of supplements rather than eating fish. It will definitely give you good relief.
